Aerospace Applications: ZoloTASS™

Multiplexed spectroscopy was originally developed as a diagnostic for combustion in aeropropulsion systems. The technique has been used for measuring temperature and species concentrations in pulse detonation engines, gas turbine engines, SCRAMJET engines, and jet engine augmentor/afterburners.

The ZoloTASS is a ground test diagnostic system that was developed with these aeropropulsion applications in mind. It has the ability to measure H2O, CO, CO2, O2, unburned fuel (e.g. ethylene, methane) concentration as well as pollutants such as NO2 in the combustion zone at high temperature and pressure. In addition, the system has the ability to measure temperature, and all of these measurements can be made with two-dimensional resolution using proprietary tomographic techniques provided that sufficient optical access is available. For instance, a temperature map can be constructed from absorption data that allows that user to observe the temperature field directly in front of turbine blades. Fast update rates (up to 100 kHz for some applications) allow the diagnosis and monitoring of combustion dynamics, in-situ. As another example, novel fuel injection schemes can be evaluated quickly reducing development cost, time, and risk.

Some of the benefits that the ZoloTASS provides are:

  • Monitor combustion efficiency for optimization
  • Reduce NOX emissions
  • Reduce turbine blade fatigue and wear
  • Monitor combustion dynamics
  • Monitor and diagnose combustion instability
  • Identify and monitor hot spots

The design of the ZoloTASS is such that the system can be miniaturized for embedded flight diagnostics, monitoring and control. Zolo Technologies is in the early stages of developing a ZoloTASS for embedded flight applications.
